To Bring Out From Within…

I have been a professional educator my entire life, both on the elementary level and on the university level. Working with any age of student requires patience and creativity in order to get across the necessary content. There are many pieces of information that educators need to share with their students, but it is the incidental learning that is probably the most profound. It is the method of learning, the experience with other learners, the feeling of being valued as a person that stays with the learner.

Each person is born with a unique set of gifts, they come from unique family backgrounds and each has a set of unique experiences that provide a basis for their learning abilities and their focus. This unique background is the filter through which each person views the world and makes sense of their surroundings.

The talents within the individual are the special divine gifts that the person has come into the world to share. Years ago, I read an article that brought out the definitions of the Greek and Roman roots of some of our English words. In that article I discovered that the root of educator meant to bring out from within. I have referred to myself as an educator ever since. I see my role as guiding and helping to unlock the gifts that the student, the individual, has within them… their special and unique gift to the world. Of course, I would also add that, in my opinion, these are gifts from Spirit and that these gifts are their special service to mankind and to the world around them… their purpose.

With this in mind, I see each individual as a unique child of God. Each person has a gift to share and a service to bring forth and each of us has an opportunity to assist in unlocking these gifts and allowing each other to shine. This can be done in a classroom, a church camp or school setting or in the home, between a parent and a child.

How amazing to consider the beauty and the magnificence of helping another to unlock their potential and to discover their gift to life. Consequently, it becomes more and more important to look past our differences and to look within the individual and to see the light within each person.

In this world of challenges, division, and differences, there is a great need for conversation and encouragement between people. Each of us has a unique background and set of beliefs, but no matter what nationality or religious belief, we all have a gift to share. It seems more and more important, with each interaction, that we look past our differences and look within the individual and assist each other in bringing out the best within each heart and in bringing out from within… the gift of the soul.

Silent Sentinel

Living in the northeast, brings special moments….

At the present time we are cloaked in a blanket of snow.  It is beautiful and it is challenging… but there are occasional peeks of sun that bring hope for the Spring that is beckoning us forward.

These days, my attention has been consistently drawn to the trees… standing tall… and silent … waiting… How strong they are… how resilient… how majestic.

I have recently been reminded over and over… to be like the tree in winter… “all of life needs to rest and take time for incubation”… “learn to honor the peace of rest”…

We are so busy…. doing, doing, doing… we feel that ‘doing’ is a sign of success and worth…

There is another part of the journey… to go within and just ‘be’….  to surrender to the silence and nourishment offered… to be like the tree and answer the call… to wait, as if silent, for the new day… the sun… the warmth… the bringing forth of new life… the new leaf… the lush green canopy… the crowning glory of spring time.

Be like the tree in winter…

Allow the incubation time… that brings the beautiful buds of spring… which flow into the colorful blooms of summer… and beyond…

The Strawberry

I like to walk in the morning before the hustle and bustle of the day gets into full swing… as I work to keep the list of the day’s projects from flooding my mind… I take in my surroundings and listen to my environment as I enjoy a few moments of solitude and communing with nature. Recently, as I walked with a friend, I was struck by the beauty of the springtime… the trees looked extra green against the blue sky and there were no clouds in the sky. We had walked other days in a steady rain, but the feeling was somewhat the same… there is sheer joy in just being in nature and just allowing the moments to envelope me and feeling the touch of Spirit in all experiences. There were the newly budding evergreens and the five goslings pecking and darting around their watchful ‘mom and dad’… The birds were singing their individual songs which sounded like a symphony as the breeze lifted their voices above the trees. I felt surrounded by God’s loving countenance… and I was grateful…
When I can have this kind of experience, I am reminded of the dialogue surrounding ‘living in the present moment’. Have you ever read about or been told that you should live in the present moment? It is something that spiritual teachers remind us of and encourage us to remember. Have you ever wondered how that would out-picture in your life? What does it really mean?
I am reminded of a story about a ‘strawberry’ which gives a really clear visual of what it means to live in the present moment. I thought I would share it with you…
“There once was a Zen monk being pursued by a ferocious tiger. He raced to the edge of the cliff, looked back and saw the tiger about to spring. He saw a rope hanging over the edge of the cliff. He grabbed it and began to shimmy down out of the clutches of the tiger. Whew! He checked below and saw a quarry of huge, jagged rocks. He looked above and the tiger was poised atop with bared claws. Just then, two mice began to nibble at the rope. What to do? He saw a strawberry within arms reach growing out of the face of the cliff. He plucked it, ate it, and said, “Yum – yum, that’s the best strawberry I’ve tasted in my whole life!” If he had been preoccupied with the rocks below, the future, or with the tiger above, the past, he could have missed the strawberry God was giving him in the present moment.”

The Heart Cloud

I went to a school this week to read one of my books, I AM With You All Ways, to the children in the third grade. The principal was wonderful, the teachers were wonderful and the children were so attentive and responsive.
We talked about the writing process and how you get ideas and how to keep a journal and think about illustrations. I shared several photographs I had taken and how they became illustrations in my books.
It was a heartwarming experience as my granddaughter was my assistant and helped me show the pictures and paintings and several heart rocks that I brought along!
As I shared some pictures I had taken of clouds, the children were excited to tell about clouds they had seen that looked like horses and super heroes and a penguin in a motor boat! As they looked at my pictures of clouds (Messages in the Clouds)… There was an elephant~ or was it an ostrich? There was an angel ~ or was it an airplane? There was a phoenix ~ or was it a peacock? And there was a heart cloud ~ I asked what message a heart would tell us ~ expecting them to say ‘love’…
A little girl with beautiful purple glasses raised her hand right in front of me… she said, “Well, when I saw a heart cloud, my Grammy had just died and I thought she was telling me she loved me.”
There it was! My whole point… sitting there in this little girl!
Messages from Spirit come to us in many ways and in many forms … we just pray to be attuned to our environment and to be aware enough to see and listen for Spirit’s voice…
God bless the children! …for their openness and their acceptance…

Do you see what I see?

I was in a bookstore the other day. It is a big book store with two floors to peruse.  We were there to pick up a book we had ordered and then we went downstairs to the Bible section … I was looking at different versions and suddenly a woman reached in front of me and held a Bible up to a satchel she was holding in her hand… she remarked… “It doesn’t fit”…

I said something about what a good idea it was to bring the satchel so that she could check on whether the Bible would fit into her satchel… she said she was buying it that day. Then, she began telling me that God had spoken to her and that He had clearly said, “Do you see what I see?”  She said that she looked out her window and wondered what she was seeing… but the voice said, “Do you see what I see?” She knew that it was beyond the physical items in her world or her environment… she related her experience and the four scriptures that had been spoken to her…

I listened intently… I wrote the scriptures down that she had heard … She was very emotional about the words she had heard and after I had listened to her story and written down the scriptures… she asked if she could hug me… I agreed and we hugged… she was crying… I told her to have courage…

The scriptures that she wanted to share are as follows:

Jeremiah 24… verse 3

Jeremiah 5

Zachariah 4

Revelation 11

This was a special encounter and I just thought that I would share the experience and the scriptures.  Keeping the faith…

Hopi Wisdom

I have a favorite passage that seems to circle around at critical times.  I love the messages.  It is entitled: Hopi Wisdom.  It clearly speaks of feeling the flow of life when we feel stuck or we are holding on to ‘something’ too tightly.

We are called to allow for ‘the flow’… the flow of life… and the flow of the universe that is in everything and connects us to everything and each other.  It is like the river current that takes us down life’s many paths and beckons us on… and on…

Many live life working against the current… feeling that there is a best way and holding on to the shoreline in a sense that allows for our need to control… control the path… control the outcome…

When we let go of the shore and allow ourselves to ride the flow of the current… it takes us where we need to go and places us where we need to be…

There is no prescription or rule book, just a willingness and courage to let go and go with the flow… and feel our connectedness with Spirit…connected to a force greater than ourselves…and in so doing…          allowing for the feeling that where we are and where we are going is ‘just right’…

Please experience Hopi Wisdom…

A Hopi elder speaks:

“You have been telling the people that this is the Eleventh Hour, now you must go back and tell the people that this is the Hour.  And there are things to be considered . . .

Where are you living?
What are you doing?
What are your relationships?
Are you in right relation?
Where is your water?
Know your garden.
It is time to speak your Truth.
Create your community.
Be good to each other.
And do not look outside yourself for the leader.”

Then he clasped his hands together, smiled, and said, “This could be a good time!”

“There is a river flowing now very fast.  It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid.  They will try to hold on to the shore.   They will feel they are torn apart and will suffer greatly.

“Know the river has its destination.  The elders say we must let go of the shore, push off into the middle of the river, keep our eyes open, and our heads above water.   And I say, see who is in there with you and celebrate.  At this time in history, we are to take nothing personally, Least of all ourselves.  For the moment that we do,  our spiritual growth and journey comes to a halt.

“The time for the lone wolf is over.  Gather yourselves!  Banish the word struggle from you attitude and your vocabulary.  All that we do now must be done in a sacred manner and in celebration.

“We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.”
